Sonopia secures $12.7 million in series B financing led by Cardinal Venture Capital
New Venture Poised to Drive Massive Proliferation of Mobile Carriers and Change the Way People Think about Cell Phones
Menlo Park, Calif. – May 1, 2007 – Underscoring the potential of its recently introduced branded mobile services offerings, Sonopia today announced a $12.7 million series B financing round led by Cardinal Venture Capital. Previous investors Sevin Rosen Funds, ComVentures and well-respected individuals from the credit card and mobile communications industries also invested in this round. The funds will be used to advance the company's goal of providing American consumers with mobile services tailored to their lifestyles and preferences.
"Wireless technology has already changed the way we live and work, and Sonopia is leading the next evolution in mobile services by putting consumers in control," said Christian Borcher, General Partner at Cardinal Venture Capital. "People want choice and they want to feel connected to the companies with which they do business. Sonopia and its partners are changing the way people think about cell phones by enabling them to support a cause they care about or more closely align with a preferred brand just by making their daily calls."
Sonopia makes it possible for anyone - whether a major corporation, a charity, a sports franchise, a professional organization, a university, a luxury brand, a neighborhood club or an entrepreneurial individual – to become a mobile carrier in a matter of minutes. Sonopia handles all the backend details for its partners' branded mobile services, and each party gets a portion of the money generated by subscribers' monthly usage fees.
Sonopia-powered mobile carriers – each called a "Sonopia" – offer subscribers the complete suite of features and functionality they've come to expect from a wireless service provider, plus value-added offerings such as:
- The opportunity to support an organization or an individual they care about just by doing something they're going to do anyway – using a cell phone
- Customized content delivered directly to the phone
- Online community of like-minded subscribers, with social-networking functionality such as blogging and photo sharing
- An ability to subscribe to rich user-generated content from groups and individuals
- Branded handsets and easy-to-use branded interface
"Across the United States, tens of thousands of brands, charities, environmental organizations, universities and sports teams serve loyal individuals, said Juha Christensen, founder and CEO of Sonopia. "With a mobile phone and calling plan from one of these organizations, subscribers get three benefits: access to information directly from the source, the opportunity to support a good cause just by making their daily calls, and a chance to more closely align with and show off their affinity for a particular organization or brand."
Individuals interested in creating their own Sonopia, providing their friends and family with customized mobile services and making some extra money, can do so at www.sonopia.com.
In addition to giving groups, clubs, families and individuals the opportunity to create their own mobile carrier, Sonopia also works directly with major non-profit organizations and brands on creating custom-made mobile carriers.
